Tukaram Maharaj was a saint, poet, and philosopher who lived in the 17th century in the Indian state of Maharashtra.

Tukaram Maharaj was born in the small village of Dehu, located near Pune in Maharashtra, India. He was born to a family of farmers, and his father’s name was Bolhoba.
Tukaram was deeply influenced by the teachings of Sant Dnyaneshwar, another great saint and poet from Maharashtra. He found solace in the abhangs of Sant Dnyaneshwar, and it inspired him to compose his own devotional poetry.
Tukaram’s abhangs are considered a masterpiece of Marathi literature. He wrote over 4,500 abhangs during his lifetime, which have been compiled into various volumes.
Tukaram’s last days were spent in deep contemplation and devotion. It is believed that he attained enlightenment and was taken to heaven by Lord Vitthal. This event is known as “Vaikuntha Gaman” and is a popular theme in his abhangs.
